In the new Naverian Empire, the church’s role was greatly diminished, but it’s teachings were still widely accepted. It was made into law that no church could raise an army or own any land. Magic remained illegal, but the authority to determine who was guilty became the dominion of the Courts rather than the Church. Burning magic users at the stake became far less common, though the common folk still generally feared magic.
Many smaller kingdoms were amalgamated into larger ones and the laws and nobility of Naveria were established.
Emperor Alexander Falstani had a long and tenuous reign. Unfortunately, several factors lead to widespread civil unrest. A drought spread across most of Terrenia, a high standing Cardinal in the church died of mysterious circumstances, and corruption among the King’s tax collectors meant the peasantry were unhappy.
Small-scale anti-empire uprises occured around Terrenia. Bandits and brigands began to be popping up around the empire. Eventually Alexander’s wife, Lorenna Edalgo, took ill and died. Their only son and heir, Daedrin, abdicated the throne and left to join the Church. Shortly after, Emperor Alexander married Marion Baerd, sister of the Duke of Fairwyn. Marion was extremely unpopular in Ortelai, as she had been very outspoken about the Church. Together, Alexander and Marion sired another son, Edwyn.
The Church began secretly funding these uprisings to try and destabilize the Empire. Alexander began hiring soldiers en masse to join the King’s Army to stop out the uprisings.
When Edwyn was 2, Alexander’s health began to rapidly deteriorate. He was only in his 50s but only after a few weeks, the Emperor died of an unknown sickness. Edwyn inherited the title of Emperor as Daedrin had abdicated the throne.
Marion Baerd became Queen Regent, and would rule the Empire until Edwyn became of age.
The Queen Regent has so far been ruling the Naverian Empire for 4 years. Edwyn Falstani is 6 years old. The uprisings and the brigands from the Quiet War have began dying down. A peace was reached between the Queen Regent and his Holiness Duke Josephet.
With little need for them anymore, soldiers’ contracts were ended prematurely and without severance. The Empire was in dept, with many unhappy peasants, but stability has returned once again to the Empire. But for how long.
