The Arcane Era (1000+ years ago)
Long ago in Terrenia’s history was a time of great prosperity. This was known as the Arcane Era, due to how common Magic was among ordinary people. This era also saw harmony between Humans. the other mortal races, and the Fae. During this time, great and powerful magical artifacts were created in large numbers.
Eventually, the era ended when the prosperity gave way to a demon invasion.
Lenna's First Journey (1062 years ago)
Lenna was born in the Eastern Commonlands, near what is today known as Cel'Edor. She was born on a brewery, with her loving mother and father. From a young age, she had a connection with the Faerealm, being able to communicate with the fae that lived near her farm. One day, when she was 9, raiders attacked her home and killed both her parents. In fear and stress, Lenna was somehow able to escape to the Faerealm.
There, she met a young Life Spirit named Ezu. Her and the spirit became friends, and began to travel the world. They visited many places, and made many friends.
- In Dwarfheim, she met Burden, the Earth Elemental. She helped him travel to the physical world, where he used his powers to unite the dwarves and form a mighty kingdom.
- In the Loridael, she found a young elf named Mylael. She left the Loridael and traveled with Lenna around the world.
- At the University, she met Fendon Loc Euler, a young magician.
- From the city of Tena (today's Naveria), a priest of the Three named Baryl Gagnon.
During her travels, her and her friends met many fae and traveled to many different kingdoms. During this time, huge conflicts between the kingdoms of Terrenia were commonplace. Most of the large Kingdoms had the magic of the Elementals behind them, making the conflicts very dangerous.
The small kingdom of Relia, where the University was, had no such Elemental to support them. They were the subject of many wars, with larger nations trying to annex them, and fight over the fertile land. To defend themselves, Lenna helped Fendon create a new type of magic; Death Magic. With the power of a magic unlike any the Elementals had seen before, Relia was able to secure its borders and put and end to the conflict.
Having ended the war throughout Terrenia, Lenna returned to her homeland to live the rest of her life in peace. She and her friends parted ways; Fendon returned to the University to keep peace, Baryl returned to the city of Tena, and Mylael traveled back to the Loridael. Lenna established the monks of Tol'Enay, where she took up the craft of her parents and brewed ale, with Ezu by her side.
Lenna's Second Journey (1001 years ago)
After nearly 30 years had passed, Lenna heard stories about the evils running throughout Terrenia. Tales of demons possessing people and causing mass destruction. She left her home for the last time, never to return.
In the Loridael, she saved Mylael from a demon. The confrontation left her scarred and she remained asleep for the rest of her life.
Lenna learned what had happened while she was gone. Something had happened, and Fendon had accidentally summoned the Death Elemental to the Physical world. It had immediately possessed him and began summoning other demons into the world: thousands and thousands of demons began pouring into the world.
Ezu told Lenna that she would need the power of all the elements to be able to send the Death Elemental back to where it came from. They made the treacherous journey around Terrenia, gathering the blessings of the Elementals. In Tena, Baryl had created a safe haven for people, and became known as the Best Last Bastion of humanity. Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the small city.
Before Lenna could gather all the blessings, the Death Elemental learned of the plans and decided to possess Syndra, the Fire Elemental. With only six of the elements, she would not have the power to defeat it. Instead, she used the power to fuse with Syndra, trapping the Death Elemental inside her.
With the power of the Death Elemental, she had seven elements; and enough power to do whatever she needed. Baryl sealed her in a prison beneath Tena, where Lenna used the last of her strength to split the Faerealm and the Physical world apart, with her being trapped between world. In the Space Between Worlds, neither her nor the Death Elemental would have any powers, and so they would remain there forever.
Above ground, the land still had many demons, causing great devistation. The task of saving the world landed on Baryl.
The Burning Era (1000 - ~700 years ago)
The mortal kingdoms of Terrenia were in chaos. Demons began possessing people, stealing their bodies and causing large scale horrors wherever they went. At first, demons targeted those with great magical power as it seemed as though the demons wanted only to cause as much damage and death as possible. As those who could wield magic died out, demons began possessing regular people as well. Anyone could be a demon and the mortals races were nearly wiped off the face of Terrenia.
The elves retreated to their woods, killing anyone who would enter their land in case they might be possessed. The dwarves sealed their mines and cut off all communication with the outside world. The Fae disappeared and were never heard from again.
As the population dwindled, a faction known as the Templar began to fight back against the demons and save humanity.
The Best Last Bastion (700 years ago)
Near the end of the Burning Era, the city of Tena was founded. The founding of the city as according to the Church of Light, was that the Goddess, Talena, came to the city to save its people from the demon invasion. She taught the Templar how to destroy a demon which kept the city of Tena safe, giving it the nickname the Best Last Bastion.
The Templar began a long, multi-year campaign to travel to every corner of Terrenia, ridding the land of demons and teaching common folk methods to identify, isolate, and kill demons. The end of the Burning Era led way to the Holy Era.
The Holy Era (~700 - 500 years ago)
The Campaign of Influence (0 - 50 HE)
Even after the demon scourge had more or less ended, the Templar continued travelling across Terrenia in a new campaign they called the Campaign of Influence. Instead of hunting demons, they were spreading the teachings of the Goddess of Talena. The Church of Light was established and gained an absolute theocratic rule over the land. The land of Terrenia became known as the Holy Empire.
The Holy Empire (50 - 199 HE)
The Holy Empire was a theocratic aristocracy with absolute control and authority of all its citizens. The Church believed that demons created magic, and that magic creates more demons so magic items were hunted down and destroyed, and magic users were rounded up and burned at the stake.
During this time, with the decreased threat of demons the elves slowly began to allow outsiders in their forests, and the dwarves eventually opened the doors to their mines. Due to their actions during the Burning Era, the humans were very mistrustful of the elves and dwarves. This racial scism remains to this day.
The Naverian Conquest (199 HE)
As memories of the demons faded from people’s minds, the oppressive governance of the Church created a stir of political upheaval. During this time, a young charismatic man named Damen Naverus proclaimed himself King of an area known as Fairwyn and declared war against the Holy Empire. He began a campaign against the church’s authoritative rule, but not against their teachings. He rallied those disillusioned with the Church and, after a long and bloody conquest, Naverus eventually gained control of the city of Tena and Holy Empire fell. He renamed the city Naveria and declared himself Emperor of a newly established Naverian Empire.
The Common Era (0 ca - 499 CE)
In the new Naverian Empire, the church’s role was greatly diminished, but it’s teachings were still widely accepted. It was made into law that no church could raise an army or own any land. Magic remained illegal, but the authority to determine who was guilty became the dominion of the Courts rather than the Church. Burning magic users at the stake became far less common, though the common folk still generally feared magic.
Many smaller kingdoms were amalgamated into larger ones and the laws and nobility of Naveria were established.
The Quiet War (490 - 497 CE)
Emperor Alexander Falstani had a long and tenuous reign. Unfortunately, several factors lead to widespread civil unrest. A drought spread across most of Terrenia, a high standing Cardinal in the church died of mysterious circumstances, and corruption among the King’s tax collectors meant the peasantry were unhappy.
Small-scale anti-empire uprises occured around Terrenia. Bandits and brigands began to be popping up around the empire. Eventually Alexander’s wife, Lorenna Edalgo, took ill and died. Their only son and heir, Daedrin, abdicated the throne and left to join the Church. Shortly after, Emperor Alexander married Marion Baerd, sister of the Duke of Fairwyn. Marion was extremely unpopular in Ortelai, as she had been very outspoken about the Church. Together, Alexander and Marion sired another son, Edwyn.
The Church began secretly funding these uprisings to try and destabilize the Empire. Alexander began hiring soldiers en masse to join the King’s Army to stop out the uprisings.
The Death of Emperor Alexander Falstani (495 CE)
When Edwyn was 2, Alexander’s health began to rapidly deteriorate. He was only in his 50s but only after a few weeks, the Emperor died of an unknown sickness. Edwyn inherited the title of Emperor as Daedrin had abdicated the throne.
Marion Baerd became Queen Regent, and would rule the Empire until Edwyn became of age.
The Present (499 CE)
The Queen Regent has so far been ruling the Naverian Empire for 4 years. Edwyn Falstani is 6 years old. The uprisings and the brigands from the Quiet War have began dying down. A peace was reached between the Queen Regent and his Holiness Duke Josephet.
With little need for them anymore, soldiers’ contracts were ended prematurely and without severance. The Empire was in dept, with many unhappy peasants, but stability has returned once again to the Empire. But for how long.
