Cidmuir Mayze
Cidmuir is Ekhart's older brother, and talent wizard from the University. He is very self-absorbed and obsessed with his own research, often at the expense of others. More than anything, he wants to travel to the Faerealm.
Before the campaign
Cidmuir was researching a new theory he had about opening a portal to the Faerealm. When he raised this idea with his mother, she promptly rejected the idea and refused to fund his research.
Cidmuir decided to try and find funding from outside the university, and traveled to Ortello where his plan was to pose as a priest and use the Church's money to fund his research. Along the way, he met Laef, a travelling Elven Ranger from the Loridael forest.
After some time in Ortello, Cidmuir discovered a plot by Cardinal Redrose to “close the Faerealm” and destroy magic. Laef thought this was what her goddess had sent her to Ortello to stop was. Cidmuir then realized that his research could be used as a jumping off point to get in close with the Cardinal and put a wrench in his plans.
Cidmuir forged some bad versions of his research notes and showed it to the Cardinal, who agreed to try Cidmuir's plans to close the Faerealm. This dead-end research was carried out by Brother Waybrush.
After Brother Waybrush's research did not go well, Cidmuir was ordered to give him more supplies to help him. Cidmuir then stopped at Ambermoor where he continued his own version of the research that he thought would be useful in stopping or reversing whatever else Cardinal Redrose tried in attempts to close the Faerealm. He learned of a large deposit of amethyst in the Shadowfen Thicket, which would be useful for his research.
Before Cidmuir could continue his research any further, he was urgently recalled back to Ortello. Fearing for his safety and wanting to continue his research, he hatched a plan with the Silent to have himself “kidnapped”. He would be able to continue his research at the Silent camp, in the Shadowfen Thicket, close to the amethyst deposit.
In the campaign
Cidmuir, while working in the Silent camp, was discovered by Revana and the party. They sent him a message, thinking he was in danger. Cidmuir, on the verge of a breakthrough, saw his brother and his friends as a good opportunity to distract the Silent bandits. Ekhart caused a distraction, prompting Cidmuir to cast his Gate spell using the amethyst deposit as a magical anchor.
The spell was too powerful for Cidmuir to properly maintain. It took 100% of his consciousness to maintain the concentration on the spell, making it impossible for him to stop casting and close the gate. During this time, a shadow spirit used the newly opened gate to enter the physical world and possess the bandits.
After the party killed the Bandits, Ekhart interupted Cidmuir's concentration, thereby closing the gate to the Faerealm. This caused Sanglant to be forcibly thrown into the faerealm and the shock to Terra drew Revana into some unknown locale with Terra.
Ekhart and Cidmuir talked for a while, before Ekhart tried to wake Revana. While he did that, Cidmuir attempted to summon Sanglant back from the Faerealm using a magic spell to conjure Sanglant back from the Faerealm.
After some discussion, they returned to Ambermoor where Cid and Rev met Lady Zara who agreed to release Laef from prison as thanks for destroying the Silent camp. She also agreed to tell her father and the church that he died during the event.
Cidmuir, upon learning that Sanglant is able to travel into the Faerealm on command, realized that the monks of Tol'enay would be able to help him in his research. Cid and Laef left for Tol'Enay.
